Week 3 (BRIEF 2)

This week we started to research the focus of our brief, as well as our target audience. We also looked at similar existing media for this age range, and discussed what we liked about these designs and what we would do differently in our own piece.

One of the main places we looked for research was the existing site “BBC Bitesize”, as they are an informative website, that differs depending on each key stage. So to fit with our target audience we specifically looked at their KS2 site.

This was their table of contents, which i really liked as it is clear and easy to use, yet artistic and fun. I will use this technique when creating my own design as i think it really works and will appeal to our target audience.

The thing however we did not like was the content of the website, as there were too many clips and not enough interactive elements to keep the children interested.

The main thing we did like about this website, however, was the fact it is colourful and eye-catchinng, which os the aim fro the outcome of our design.

Because we are working as a group, we decided to treat this as a group production and create a production schedule based around our individual timetables as to when we can meet up.

Working in a group is much more challenging as you have to find a time that you can all meet up, so by creating a production schedule, it made this easier.

This week we also continued with our research, mainly on Einstein himself this week, as we needed to know a little bit more background information so that our graphics and theme are all relevant, and do not look out of place.

Another peice of research I did this week was on app design and layout, I looked at existing apps and similar themes and features that can be found in each.

Here are the designs for popular apps, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.

I like the design of the Facebook layout and how the menu button is a simplistic 3 line tab. I think this is a very good feature and it is very easy to navigate. I will consider using this feature when it comes to creating my design.

This week we did some research taught in our design workshop on graphics. We wanted our graphics to be fun and colourful to appeal to our target demographic. We decided the first place to look at graphics was on games. The graphic that stood out to us the most from all of the game graphics we looked came from the game ‘Little big planet’:

I liked the childlike feel of the graphics. The main thing, however, that i thought was a good design was the way that the characters are presented on strings in some of the advertisements. I thought this looked really effective and would suit the design we are aiming to create.

Week 3

Now that i had gained practise creating existing type, it was time to research and get some influence so that i could create my own. i started by thing about my favourite Logo’s and they type used to create that logo.

SEGA- I like the use of type on the SEGA gaming logo, as i feel it is very futuristic and stands out, i like the bulk of it and the line running through the middle to give it definition. I feel the type is very appropriate for its use. I wanted to find out more about this logo so i went to the Logopedia website to see how this Logo had evolved through time.

DISNEY- Another of my favourite logos is the Disney logo. I love this logo as i feel it has a very friendly magical feel to it! I like the bold handwritten element to it and the emphasis the type puts upon the ‘D’. Again i feel this logo is very fitting to its audience and use, which is something i want my type to be.

After looking at logos i like, i felt it was time to look at recognised typographic designers and their work.

One of my favourite typographic designers is ‘Alex Trochut’ as i like the futuristic element of his work. My personal favourite is his type designed for ‘V Magazine’:

I feel there is a similar element to his work as there is the the SEGA logo I looked at earlier. I will consider his work as an influence when creating my own type.
