Brief 1

I enjoyed creating and researching for my typography, I found a lot of type that I liked and have expanded my knowledge on how many different types there are. I think that my typography matches the brief and the aim of this project and I am happy with the work I have produced. If I was to change my typography I would have added a few more lines to my type and adjusted some of the lettering. Also, if I had more time, would have created a few more mock ups of my type being used in different formats.

Brief 2

I found this brief very challenging,  but i feel that as a group we worked really well and have produced some good work. I think that our final design is suitable for the target demographic we have chosen, and i feel we have followed and exceeded the brief. The main thing i would change if i did this project again would be that i would work alone. The main reason for this being that it was much more challenging working as a group and finding times where we could all meet, and making sure that we all had equal input into the work we produced. I think however, we worked really well under these circumstances and produced a product we are all happy with and have all taken care into making.

In terms of the design itself, I really like the theme we have chosen and the layout of each of our designs and outputs. We have created something fun and colourful, yet also informative, which was what we was aiming for. Each element of our design we have thoroughly thought about, and everything is sized and placed for a reason, and in awareness of our demographic.

Progress

I think I have made major progress in the development of my ideas of my design, for example shown in these two images of my first and final draft of the app home page:

Week 6 (BRIEF 2)

This week I finalised my drafts for my designs:

APP HOME PAGE-

I added some stars to my design and moved the placement of the graphics around a bit. I am happy with this final design.

Here is my final design for the ‘Earth’ page for the app:

App final final12

I have altered the placement of the text on this page, i think it works a lot better here and looks more professional. I have also added the stars that i added on the home page to add to continuity.

Here is my final design for the ‘Saturn’ page of the app:

I decided I did not like the random letter placement in my previous draft, so I removed them and replaced them with stars.

Here is my final design for the ‘Earth’ website page:

website page final3

I altered pretty much all of this page from my first draft, starting with the menu bar at the top, which I feel is much more fitting for a web design output. I then changed the placement of the graphics and added some more graphic such as the moon and the stars. I aligned the text to the left instead of over the top of the planet like in the last draft. I think this makes the text much more readable.

Final design for ‘Saturn’ website page:

I used the menu bar that i had used on the ‘Earth’ page, and added the star graphics to the page. I also changed the layout of the text from on top of the planet to make it more readable.

Week 5 (BRIEF 2)

Now that we had our drawn graphics we could get to work with creating drafts of our designs. We worked out a plan so that we all were getting an equal amount of input into each design. We delegated each of us pages to work on a draft, then we would bring these drafts to our scheduled meeting times and each have our input into each others work and swap and change things. This was also very useful as it meant that all our work looked similar instead of 3 separate pieces of work, this is a good thing because it adds to continuity and proffesionalism of the piece. I was delegated the roles of:

-Front page of the app

-‘Earth’ page of the app

-‘Saturn’ page of the app

-‘Earth’ page of the website

– ‘Saturn’ page of the website

Here is my first draft of the home page of the app:

I used many elements found in my research for this draft for example, i used the home page icon in the top corner that i found and liked on Facebook. I also used the idea from ‘Little Big Planet’ of having my graphics hung from strings. I am very happy with this as a first draft as i think it is heading towards what i was hoping it to look like. The second image shows what happens when the menu tab is clicked, it produces a drop down menu. I decided this menu had to be very simplistic and easy to navigate because of the age range of my product, and i think i have achieved that here in my design.

When I brought my design back to the group they really liked it and after taking their input and the style of their designs on board, i created my second draft of this page:

App final final3 App final final4

I changed they layout of my graphics on my second draft as we felt that there was a lot of space being wasted in the first draft, so instead of having my planets placed in a vertical line, i scattered them around the page. I really like this layout better as i feel it looks more edgy and childlike.

App final final5

I also added a feature to my second draft as shown above. When a planet is selected, a gold ring surrounds the planet, and white outline appears around the planet.

This week i also started drafting the pages for the app. Here is my ‘Earth’ page, first draft:

App final final9 App final final10

I followed continuity with tis page, as I wanted the pages and the home page to be similar. I don’t like the placement of the text in this draft and will definitely be changing it in my next draft.

Here is my first draft of the ‘Saturn’ page for the app:

App final final13 App final final14

I tried something new for this design, i played around with text and lettering, and scattered the word ‘Relativity’ across the page. I am not 100% sure if this works or if it looks a bit unprofessional and messy. I will re visit this in my next draft.

I then moved on to the pages of the website. I wanted there to be continuity between the outputs of the pages, so tried to keep the pages similar the pages on the app. Here is my ‘Earth’ page for the website:

website page final2

From research I found that many websites use a ‘Back to home page’ tab, like the one i have used in the top left hand corner. I do like this feature and it is easy to navigate but i am going to try out other ideas in my other drafts too. Another feature i think doesn’t work very well is the placement of the text on the planet, i think it is lost in the graphic and does not stand out as well as i want it to, i will have to re consider this in my next draft.

Here is my ‘Saturn’ web page, which is similar to the ‘Earth’ page, and faces the same problems that i will correct in my next draft:

Week 4 (BRIEF 2)

This week we decided to start drafting some ideas for our design. We decided for this progress it would be good if we all took a segmat each and created 3 individual drafts then brought them together and compared them and took the good elements from each to come up with a design we are all happy with. I chose to draft the main screen for the app design. Here is the draft that I created.

APP APP2

I decided to focus my design on space as part of Einstein’s theory. I used graphics I found on the internet and edited them for my draft. I used the Facebook menu feature, I liked from my research, in my own design. The second image shows how when the menu tab is selected it produces a drop down menu on the left hand side.

I am happy with these as my first drafts however i recognise that i have a long way to go before it is how I want it to look. When I had finished my design i took it to the group and we all shared our ideas on how we thought each design could be made better and what we liked, for example we all liked the theme of planets and space. However, the main thing that stood out from this meeting was the use of graphics found on the internet. We thought it would look much more professional if we drew and scanned the graphics in ourselves. Taking note of this we started to get to work straight away on drawing the graphics. We gave each of us a graphic to draw and then went and drafted them, however when we then brought them all together they looked odd because they all looked different. We decided it would look better if one person drew them so that they all looked the same, because Natalie is the artistic one of the group she volunteered to draw them. Here are the drawn and scanned in graphics:

I am very happy with the way the graphics turn out as they are exactly what we imagined. We wanted them to purposely look hand drawn and childlike, yet colourful and fun. I feel that these graphics fit the target demographic perfectly, based on my research.
